Grand Sunset Princess Resort - Playa Del Carmen Mexico

Hi there!

Its Tim and April and once more

It's time for another update! This one is a few weeks behind but worth the wait! This trip finds us back in Mexico at the Grand Sunset Princess (Check out on Trip Advisor) This hotel is huge it is actually two hotels that mirror each other, (Note if you like to party and loud music book the Rivera- The swim ups in the 600 block are less that 40 feet from the swim up bar and daily activities and DJ) The sister being the Grand Rivera Princess, the sunset seems to be the newer one and in our opinion better one to stay at.

The hotel stretches about 1/3 of a mile long we stayed in the swim up suites which were totally worth the small upgrade price, you have several options, they have two levels above the swim up the Platinum and the Laguna Villa they come with concierge service and access to another restaurant and Buffet at the beach if I had to choose Id say go with the Laguna villa they are more private with a totally private pool area and are away from the notice of the main pool area.

This is a family hotel so there are tons of kids but plenty of room to find your own area. With the swim up suite you have your own lounge and entry into the pool just for you right off your balcony between the two hotels there are over 10 restaurants a buffet at both hotels which has wonderful food and a bunch of theme restaurants.

We loved the Mexican and Fondue ones best. All your food and Drinks are included there were 15 bars on the grounds including a sports bar that had snacks 24 hours a day. Bring your own cup it really saves time and helps keep the mixed drinks cold longer just had it to the bartenders, they have a towel shack where you can exchange beach towels every day but do that first thing before they run out , you do have to make reservations for the main restaurants a day in advance the station to do that is by the front desk so do that right after you get your room key and you wont have to make a trip back, you can reserve 2 days in advance at a time so your first day there you will have to eat at the buffets.

They have a nightly show and nightly entertainment from fire twirlers to yes the Ricky Martin show (totally lip sinked and pretty funny) the disco isn’t much as far as size and fun but you can head to Playa Del Carmen 3 miles away to Coco Bongo if you want the crazy night life.

The hotel is kept immaculate, the drinks plentiful and the staff was super friendly. The beach is wonderful it’s only about three feet deep going out about 100 yards so it’s really nice to ride some waves, it’s a tad rocky but once you’re out a little its great and warm. Over all wed recommend this hotel and the food you can spend a week in the off season with air from Oregon and a private car from the airport for under $2400 a great little getaway!

Tips – Book your own private car or take a cab it’s about the same price and will get you there much faster.

If you take continental airlines – Get on line exactly 24 hours before your flight for check in they have 1st class upgrade options for $79 per person per leg, if you upgrade even one leg you get 1st class lines and baggage handling for your whole flight – 70 pounds per bag and 2 checked bags for free plus you get the 1st class line (worth it just for that) we skipped a line of over 200 people and were checked through in less than 10 minutes coming home from Cancun.

Bring Insulated Cups!

Bring your own Coffee.

Bring some extra Towels .

And Bring Mosquito Repellant and a lot of it!

Off season (Sept to Dec) the hotels are only at 20% capacity and as you get into November the temperature is around 80ish so you don’t completely burn. Oh One last Note although no nudity is alowed on the hotel grounds pretty much any Bikini goes and there is always a topless women or two on the beach .

Happy Travels
Tim & April
